Saints got clues to Cowboys’ offense from Kellen Moore’s Boise State tape

Recommended Posts

Interesting...

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/10/08/saints-got-clues-to-cowboys-offense-from-kellen-moores-boise-state-tape/

The Saints’ defense had an impressive performance against the Cowboys’ offense last week, and they studied Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s college playing days to do it.

Saints players told Steve Wyche of NFL Network that they went back to Boise State tape from Moore’s years as the quarterback there to see what kinds of hand signals he used. The Saints then found that Moore uses some of the same signals when calling the Cowboys’ offense, and those tendencies helped the Saints shut down the Cowboys.

Moore was Boise State’s starting quarterback from 2008 to 2011. It’s surprising that he’s still using the hand signals, and impressive that the Saints were able to decipher them successfully.

Also surprising, however, is that the Saints would reveal what they learned publicly. The Saints and Cowboys could meet again in the playoffs, so why would the Saints want the Cowboys to know what they’ve learned.

The Cowboys, meanwhile, won’t be happy with this news. After the Cowboys’ playoff loss to the Rams last year, Dallas head coach Jason Garrett disputed suggestions that the Rams’ offense was picking up on the Cowboys’ defensive line calls. Now they’re again hearing that another team knew what was coming.

Smart for the Saints and their DC

Dumb for the Cowboys and their OC

No coincidence the Cowboys are now on a 2 game losing streak and are losing when they play against good teams and aren't feasting on NFL's worst.

Is this really true? It sounds good but a bit unbelievable.

Here's another article on the subject...

"To hell with blocking and tackling,'' one New Orleans Saints source told CowboysSI.com following last week's 12-10 defeat of Dallas. "We looked at 2008 Boise State film of when Kellen started quarterbacking there. And we stole it all.

"We looked at the film and read his lips. Kellen has, shall we say, very expressive lips.''

Maybe it's a personal play by Payton against Jerruh and the Cowboys?

This could ruin the Cowboys offense unless they change the system of how they relay playcalling from the sidelines, which wouldn't be easy to do right away while the season is going. That may take some time.

Well if the Packers were aware of it as well, then it's just plain ignorance and stupidity of the Cowboys to lack the thought of their playcalling system routine being easily picked by opposing teams with intelligent coaches.

That's one reason why you see most HCs or coordinators cover their mouths on the sidelines when making a call. I also thought that hand signalling out in the open was dying out during an era of footage being everywhere.

Having to change your whole form of communication doesn't just happen overnight.

Yep, which is why the Cowboys are fucked.

Expect Skip Bayless to be on bitching and excuse mode for the rest of the season

Changing your communication methods midseason will take away precious gameplanning time and cause confusion amongst players and coaches.

Cowboys can only blame themselves for this. Might as well put their plays on that huge screen in the middle of their stadium for everyone to see.

Thought this was funny. Everyone is praising the Saints for studying the hand signals but puts asterisks on the Buc's SB win because the Raiders never changed theirs. Hmmm...🤔

Who's taking anything away from the Bucs for taking advantage of the Raiders dumbassery?!

Same people that said Gruden won with Dungy's team. Dungy could never beat Philadelphia.

Gruden did win with Dungy's team for the most part....is it Gruden's fault that Dungy wasn't good enough to coach the talent he had to a Super Bowl? Hell no

Just like it isn't Gruden's fault that the Raiders didn't bother to change the locks on the door when they got rid of their coach

See, to the people who say Gruden won with Dungy's team, I always rebute with, "Then, Callahan took Gruden's team to the same Super Bowl. Can't have it one way without the other..."

Tampa won that Champ fair and square simply with better coaching.  Same as the Saints have right now; same as Falcons are SEVERELY lacking...

REALLY DUMB. You keep that Ace in the hole until AFTER the season, actually maybe never. Just stupid and short-sighted.

only way it isn't dumb is if it does enough damage to keep them out the playoffs

Why not keep it for as long as those coaches are still in the NFL? Also, why give other teams ANOTHER avenue of study on how to improve? Why not keep this potential coaching cash cow to yourself? I just don't get it.

I wonder about the timing where this came out after the packers beat the cowboys. Could be it had already leaked

indeed - and it keeps other teams wide open to the possibility of being figured out.

You don't want to diminish your teams prowess on the field by some "see - they knew the play" b.s.

How impactful was it is the question. Reading hand signals doesn't make for better tackling and winning the line of scrimmage.
