Astros May Be In Serious Trouble For Cheating

Recommended Posts

So audio has come out that the Astros have used technology to decipher the opponents signals, and they were then relaying those signals to the batter by banging on a trashcan in the dugout. Like one bang for off speed pitches and two bangs for fastball.

I haven't paid much attention as this story has developed, essentially because stealing signals is part of the game IMO.

This certainly changes that opinion.

I am paraphrasing this but this is what I heard on sports radio this week, the Astros went from almost bottom of the barrel off-speed pitch hitters to tops in the league at home. Then they became the ONLY team to ever lose every home game in the WS after this info came out and teams started changed their signals.

But how was the Astros banging on trash cans loud enough to tip-off their batters and not expected to get caught?

Seems like a very idiotic system because it would eventually become apparent to everyone within a decent proximity of the noise.

One would become conditioned to listen for the sound and of course, a stadium of fans creates a certain level of ambient noise.

MLB brings down somewhat of a hammer. First and Second round draft picks for 2020 and 2021 and $5 million. Then the owner came out and immediately fired the General Manager and Manager.

But I think they need to vacate the titles of the Astros and the Red Sox. This cannot stand. If the Olympics find out you were doping, they strip you of your medals and pass them down to the next place athlete. But this is worse than doping in some ways. And it affects the legacy of so many other players and coaches. $5 million is almost nothing to a team.

The manager and GM were suspended for a year, so that forced the owner's hand.

Astros have recently graduated  a lot of high prospects and pick last in rounds 1/2, so little harm there.

Stealing signs is as old as the game.

Baseball is clarifying their position in a reactive manner as opposed to proactive.  What is the consequence for Joe baserunner, standing at 2nd, giving away location?

Nothing will happen with that. But you can't have electronic equipment recording the signs and then relaying the signs to the dugout. lol

Cheating isn't on a scale.

Think of it this way, going above the speed limit...1-5 miles, most times they will let you slide, anything greater than 15 and you're getting a ticket 35+ is something like reckless endangerment or some such term.

Think of it as looking at your neighbors test paper vs stealing a copy of the answers from the teachers desk.
